Femoral Nerve Block: Common Mistakes - Crash course with Dr. Hadzic
Femoral Nerve Block: Common Mistakes
In this video Dr. Hadzic discusses the most common misconceptions and technique flaws in performing the femoral nerve block. Femoral nerve block remains the main stain as analgesia for the knee in patients who are not expected to be ambulatory. The technique can also be used for a number of surgical operations on the knee patella and patellar tendon as the sole anesthesia technique. In discussing, Dr. Hadzic points out the importance of identifying fascia iliaca and its two layers that envelop the femoral nerve. Instead of injecting on the nerve, under the nerve, or around the nerve, he teaches the safer, simpler and more anatomical technique of injecting a local anesthetic between the two layers of the fascia daily are cut away from the femoral nerve, and he then demonstrates in the ultrasound video in NYSORA’s practice the correct distribution of the local anesthetic in order to block the femoral nerve. He also stresses out the importance of needle being distant from the femoral nerve to avoid injury and using the displacement of the femoral nerve between the two layers of factually accurate as an indication of the correct injection.
