Melanosis coli is a common condition often found incidentally with colonoscopy. It is caused by increased apoptosis of the cells in the colonic and rectal mucosa due to mucosal damage most frequently caused by laxatives but may also be found in cases of chronic colitis. one feature of melanosis coli that is useful is sparing of polyps and carcinomas by the pigment causing them to be more obvious during colonoscopy.
