Whipple's disease was described by George Whipple in 1907 who originally called it intestinal lipodystrophy. It is caused by a bacterium called Tropheryma whipplei (previously whippelii). It affects white men much more frequently than women. It may affects small bowel most frequently but also colon and appendix. It may also affect joints, lymph nodes CNS, heart, eyes, adrenal glands etc. Whipple's disease may present with confusing symptoms.
