The effective reproduction number (R) is the average number of secondary cases per infectious case in a population made up of both susceptible and non-susceptible hosts.
The effective reproduction number describes transmission after previous outbreaks have resulted in immune individuals and/or control measures have been put in place to protect the population. These may include infection control measures such as social distancing and ‘shielding’ of vulnerable individuals, and vaccination when it becomes available.
In early estimates of the reproduction number for SARS-CoV-2, R approximates R0. This reflects the underlying transmissibility of a new virus entering unprepared new populations with no previous immunity. Later, lower estimates may reflect the success of infection control measures for a given population.
