Epidemiology underpins everything we do in public health and global health. Epidemiology is more than just research methods and qualitative and quantitative study design. Its about understanding the distribution of states of health and the exposures that cause them.

Universal Health Coverage is about providing healthcare to people without pushing people into poverty. It's an exciting public health and global health tool. Countries that implement universal health coverage provide better healthcare at lower costs (the health economics evidence is clear).

Outbreak investigation and control are an important part of public health and global health work. Epidemic and outbreaks of infectious disease require a robust response that includes investigating the epidemiology, laboratory (or microbiology) and environmental characteristics of the outbreak and implementing control measures to prevent the spread of the pathogens or disease.

Pandemics are one of the greatest existential threats facing humanity today. The public health and global health measures that need to be put in place are rather obvious and yet these things are not being done on the scale that is required.

Epidemiological transition is the changing patterns of disease (and causes of death) seen in human history. Those of us interested in public health and global health need to understand that this process isn’t over.

How to write a literature review. It’s easier than you might think! In this video, I demonstrate how to search the literature and identify relevant papers for your literature review. I do a pubmed search using Boolean operators and MeSH terms (these are extremely powerful tools that will help you sift through the large number of academic papers out there).

In this video, we look at gender-based violence (and violence against women, including domestic violence and rape) and take a look at what we as individuals and as a society can do to address the problem.

You’ve decided that you’re interested in a career in global health or public health, but you’re faced with the age-old problem that you can’t apply for jobs in global health without “experience” and you can’t get the “experience” without having a job.

R0 (the basic reproductive number) tells us more than just how many people will be infected in a totally susceptible population. It can be used to calculate the how much vaccine coverage is needed to get to herd immunity.

In this video I talk about how to understand missing data and missing values. I also provide 5 strategies to deal with missing data using R programming. If you're doing quantitative analysis or statistical analysis, your dataset will almost certainly contain missing values.

Descriptive statistics is all about describing you data. To do this we firstly describe the spread of the data using the range and interquartile range. Then we might look at the central tendency of the data using the mean, median and mode. We might also describe the variability using the standard deviation and variance.

Direct age standardization and indirect age standardization are two methods for comparing the mortality rates of two populations. This is sometimes called the age adjusted mortality rate. These are methods used in public health and epidemiology to better understand death rates.

Statistics doesn't need to be difficult. Using the t-test, ANOVA or Chi Squared test as part of your statistical analysis is straight forward. You do need to understanding the underlying principles of hypothesis testing and p-values of course.

The importance of data visualisation cannont be overstated. If you are interested in telling the story of your data analysis or statistical inference, then knowing how to visualize your data is essential. It more than just know when to create a bar chart, a histogram or boxplot.

Simple linear regression models don't need to be scary. This video will take you through the basics of how to interpret linear regression results. If you are learning regression modelling or just learning statistics and quantitative analysis then this is a good place to start.

Systematic literature review with meta analysis is one of the most important methods used to review the scientific evidence on a topic. It starts with a literature search. If you're in the medical world, that might mean using PubMed (but there are other search engines). The selected studies need to be appraised.
