This patient came to the neurosurgical clinic after several months of not being able to walk properly and losing his memory. The scans showed a cyst in the middle of his brain which was stopping the normal drainage of fluid from in and around his brain.

The success of this operation is determined by how well the surgeon sets the operation up, from how they are lying, to the angle of the head and the place where the surgeon will enter the skull. The point where they need to enter to access the nerve is very close to major veins that drain blood away from the brain. Ploughing into one of these draining veins could end in catastrophic results!

Lumbar spinal surgery - percutaneous fixation This video shows a patient with a broken lumbar spine having "percutaneous fixation" in the operating theatre. The patient broke their lower back and required screws and rods to keep the broken part of the spine stable. It's possible to do this "percutaneously" which means through the skin, which is slightly less invasive for the patient.

Unboxing Robot Arm - Synaptive Modus V This is probably one of the more insane unboxing videos you'll see on Youtube as it's a robotic arm with a microscope attached to it that we use during brain surgery! The arm itself uses the Canadarm tech from the International Space Station.

This video on how to get into neurosurgery residency is primarily aimed at people in the UK, but a lot of it will be broadly applicable to global neurosurgery residency programmes.
